Vancouver Vibrates - a celebration of the works and influence of R. Murray Schafer

Throughout spring 2008, Vancouver New Music, in partnership with a number of other Vancouver arts organizations, presents Vancouver Vibrates – a series of events that celebrate the spirit and work of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer.

The city of Vancouver will be the stage, the public and the orchestra of a major musical and acoustic consciousness-raising celebration. Throughout the spring Vancouver New Music, Chor Leoni, Redshift Music, Vancouver Chamber Choir and the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra will stage concerts and community aimed at transforming audience, participants, musicians and Vancouver's inhabitants in general into active, sensitive and critical listeners to the environment. R. Murray Schafer has joined Vancouver New Music in this project as both a special guest and co-curator.

Celebrating his 75th birthday this year, Schafer is Canada’s pre-eminent composer. His works have ranged from orchestral compositions and choral music to musical theatre and multi-media productions. He has won national and international acclaim not only for his musical compositions and role in founding the World Soundscape Project, but also as an educator, environmentalist, literary scholar, visual artist and provocateur.
