Fall Soundwalks 2013

Underground Vancouver

Sunday, September 22, 2013 | 2PM
Led by Pietro Sammarco

Meeting location: 13th Avenue and Glen

Vancouver’s streets make our everyday travels easier, smoother, and safer. Underneath these streets lies a network of drains that efficiently carry rain runoff and sewage, providing us with a clean, dry urban surface. Listening to the sounds resonating up through catchbasins and utility holes, one can hear the line between technology and nature being blurred as a rushing creek is enclosed in a cement pipe to ensure the road above doesn’t collapse due to erosion. One’s imagination is invited think of a time when the road didn’t exist, when a creek slowed transit through the area. This soundwalk will take us on a short trip along one such path.

Hadden Park Soundwalk

Sunday, September 29, 2013 | 2PM
Led by Josh Hite

Meeting location: 1015 Maple Street

This walk will bring together the approaches of two collectives : Vancouver Soundwalk Collective and Ten Fifteen Maple – the art collective in residence at the Hadden Park Fieldhouse. Join us for a walk that explores the local sound environment of the Hadden Park area through a unique approach to soundwalking.

The Hadden Park Fieldhouse is located at 1015 Maple Street, at the corner of Ogden Avenue and Maple Street – it’s the building that is attached to the public washrooms by the bike path.

Hadden Park Soundwalk is presented as part of Snooze Fest (Sept. 26-29, 2013).

Soundwalks are FREE and open to the public. Soundwalks happen rain or shine, so participants should be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather condition.

A Soundwalk is a silent group walk led along a planned route to experience a location’s ambiance and underlying rhythms. All too often the sounds of the environment pass by unnoticed because of our uncanny ability to shut them out. A Soundwalk enables its participants to actively listen, opening ears and consciousness to the complex orchestration that the environment is composing at all times. It is a musical-sonic adventure that reveals the banal to be extraordinary!
