meet at the pillar with the address: 601 West Cordova St.

Traversing both above and below ground, this walk will lead listeners through the transient spaces and ephemeral sounds around the Vancouver Convention Centre and Waterfront Station.  Participants will spiral through disorienting layers of infrastructure, immersed in the myriad soundscapes of shopping, shipping, and transit.

Olympic Village Soundwalk
Sunday, May 4, 2014 | 2PM

Led by Ross Birdwise
Meeting location: Corner of Main and 2nd, at bus stop beside Shell Station (1785 Main Street)

Join sound artist and musician Ross Birdwise, and musicians Carol Sawyer (voice) and Joe Rzemieniak (trumpet) on a sound walk around the Olympic Village and the Seawall.  Narrow roads, tall buildings, and public sculpture will place their acoustic footprints on the surrounding soundscape, with occasional enhancement, accompaniment and counterpoint from the two musicians.

Soundwalks are FREE and open to the public. Soundwalks happen rain or shine, so participants should be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing for any weather condition.

A Soundwalk is a silent group walk led along a planned route to experience a location’s ambiance and underlying rhythms. All too often the sounds of the environment pass by unnoticed because of our uncanny ability to shut them out. A Soundwalk enables its participants to actively listen, opening ears and consciousness to the complex orchestration that the environment is composing at all times. It is a musical-sonic adventure that reveals the banal to be extraordinary!
