Sumire Yoshihara (percussion) and Kazue Sawai (17- and 5- string koto) are among the most respected and iconic performers of Japanese contemporary music. Bridging ancient and new sounds, this amazing duo will present a selection of Japanese contemporary music showcasing a range of wonderfully poetic approaches in a program that includes solo and duo works by Maki Ishii, Michio Kitazume, and Teizo Matsumura, as well as a new duo by Yoichi Sugiyama.

Percussion and koto clinic with Sumire Yoshihara and Kazue Sawai

Join Sumire Yoshihara and Kazue Sawai as they demonstrate their unique approaches to performing on percussion, and koto (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument).
Master koto player Kazue Sawai will be performing a 17-string koto, as well as a special, 5-string koto – a replica of a 2500 year old instrument that was excavated in China.
Sumire Yoshihara will demonstrate unique percussion techniques that bridge classical and contemporary sounds, and have made her one of the world’s foremost percussionists.
This event is free, and open to the public – no previous musical experience is required.
