pt2.
Pastel on paper, digital editing
I was heavily inspired by rhythm and resonance when composing these sounds scores. Being a former piano player from ages 10 to 16, I was able to incorporate some musical theory into this composition by exploring and reflecting on the importance of tempo and tone. My first piece embodies the repetitive and harmonizing role of the left hand while playing the piano, like a rhythmic support system that provides a sort of guided musical storyline. When thinking of music sheets, I associate it with a formula; a structural guideline to achieve a promised result. I used digital software to enhance the colours and brush strokes which I did by hand, to add not only depth but also a contemporary element (or vibe), once again relating back to beats, rhythm, repetition, and build up.

I was moved by European techno house music and EDM even though I had never previously enjoyed this genre to the fullest extent, but working on this sound score pushed me to indulge
and understand different cultural music styles and tastes so that I was able to create something as opposed to a translation of memory.

pt2.
Acrylic on cold press paper
For this second piece, I used acrylic paint on a rough
textured paper to enhance the dry brushing technique which allows for a very passionate and intense visual reading. This composition was done in a fury during which I was purely
trying to guide my brush through organic, transient and emotional flows of my hands. No specific thought or direction, I naturally went along editing and enhancing every blanc space
until I was happy with the visual. This piece does not really follow any specific genre of sound,
but I wanted to create something that would physically move the audience as they read this sound score, organically moving along with the brush strokes and following the rises and the
loops and the spikes.

This edition of the One-Page Score Project was led by Giorgio Magnanensi as a collaboration between Vancouver New Music and students in Keith Langergraber’s online ECUAD Foundation 165: Core Interdisciplinary Studio course that took place in summer 2020.
