Through musical explorations of sonic textures and gestures, spectralism embodies a fascinating and exceptionally resonating sound world. Presenting seminal works by spectral composers rarely performed in Vancouver, Spectralism harnesses the sounds of Plastic Acid Orchestra, led by Bryan Deans, and guest conductor Giorgio Magnanensi, to present works by Italian pioneer Giacinto Scelsi, French visionary Gérard Grisey, Hungarian innovator György Ligeti and a newly commissioned piece by Canadian composer Mariah J.E. Mennie.*
Giacinto Scelsi, Natura Renovatur (1967)
Mariah J.E. Mennie, Ilinx (2018)*
Györgi Ligeti, Ramifications (1968/69)
Giacinto Scelsi, Quattro pezzi su una nota sola (1959)
Gérard Grisey, Partiels (1975)
* World premiere. Commissioned by Vancouver New Music.
