Vancouver Complaints Choir

Complaints Choir – May 17, 2014

The next Complaints Choir will take to the streets May 17, 2014!

This new installment of the Complaints Choir is being created by Vanessa Richards and the Woodward’s Community Singers. If you’d like to take part, feel free to drop in on this drop-in choir and join the group Thursday nights from 6 to 7:30PM at 131 West Hastings Street in the 10th Floor Sky Room at PHS Woodward’s.

Catch the Complaints Choir on May 17, 2014 at one of three free public performances!

2PM – Victory Square Cenotaph (Cambie Street and Hastings Street)
3PM – Woodward’s Atrium (149 West Hastings Street)
4PM – Pigeon Park (Hastings Street and Carrall Street)

Complaints collected from members of the choir and the public will be woven into a song that will be crafted using Dekaaz poetic form, an expressive form originated by contemporary artist, choral activist, and composer Rachel Begby (http://rachelbagby.com/dekaaz/). This simple, three-line song form will also allow the choir to add to the song on the spot with complaints collected from the public at the performances!

The world’s first Complaints Choir took place in Birmingham, UK, and the phenomenon has spread throughout the world! Vancouver New Music organized this city’s first choir in 2008, with music composed and conducted by Steve Wright. For the next two editions the choirs were led in song by Veda Hille (2010) and Russell Wallace (2012), with each of the choirs.
