Graphic Notation (def.): a rogue representation of music using liberated symbols;
a form of freedom; a visual work of art with transformative aural potential.
This popular workshop series encourages everyone to discover the playful and engaging exercise of imagination through sonic and visual perception. We expanded the reach of this edition to the Sunshine Coast by partnering with LABORATORIO.
Participants from BC’s Sunshine Coast (and one from Brazil!) were invited to learn, explore and create all new graphic scores that will be interpreted by 12 exceptional musicians from Vancouver, the Sunshine Coast, Montreal and Ottawa.
Led by Giorgio Magnanensi, Painting Music was a workshop focused on the use of graphic notation where signs and symbols can be used to represent sounds, textures and various kinds of sonic events.
Following a one-day workshop on graphic scoring participants created original graphic scores then were paired with a musician. During a second workshop they discussed their newly composed one-page scores. From this, the musicians will create a piece based on the new score.
