This graphic notation was born out of a vigorous experimental process. Combining visualizations of different music genres, the artists aimed to create an eclectic composition. It is mainly inspired by electronic, jazz, and avant-garde music. Expressive mark-makings on paper were made in response to multiple musical pieces. They were then digitized, layered and partially distorted. The resulting score displays multiple sound layers that meet and clash together, allowing for an energetic musical experimentation to happen.

My interpretation of this score focuses on the kinetic potential of the shapes and textures in the score. I imagine the objects in the foreground springing like water spiders around a shifting, richly layered backdrop – a microscopic ecosystem in a petri dish bound by the borders of the page. Thanks to Anna and Viktor for giving me such a rich source to work from, and to VNM and ECUAD for inviting me to be a part of this project.

This edition of the One-Page Score Project was led by Giorgio Magnanensi as a collaboration between Vancouver New Music and students in Keith Langergraber’s online ECUAD Foundation 165: Core Interdisciplinary Studio course that took place in summer 2020.
