Artist Statement – Andrea Wong
Observing Jack Griffith’s graphic score, I was firstly taken by the immediate starkness of its black and white contrast, and later perceived a recurring pattern hidden throughout. Its otherworldliness led to my choice in using a non-Western instrument. I wanted to play with different sonic perceptions of this sole audio source – like the different portrayals of the recurring pattern – by capturing different timbres from a Guzheng (through plucking, tapping, brushing, bowing…). These sounds were electronically processed live through a colour-tracking interface I developed in MaxMSP, which allowed me to further manipulate the instrument’s sound from the positioning of various coloured objects.

ANDREA WONG is a sound enthusiast who began her musical journey in classical piano and traditional folk fiddle music. She discovered her interest in sound and technology during her enrollment in UBC’s Applied Music Technology program. Andrea was a programmer at Sonic UBC Laptop Sounds and Sensors (SUBCLASS), where she worked alongside other musicians and dancers in composing for interactive media art performances. She also developed an electronic audio-visual tabletop instrument, C.H.I.M.I.R.A. (Color-Hearing Interface + Motion-Image Relaying Apparatus), a device that can control various aspects of sound through the manipulation of data from coloured objects. Currently, Andrea works as a sound designer for Virtro Entertainment.
