One-Page Score Project: Jessie Luo + Jordan Robertson / Brent Cross

Score created by Jessie Luo + Jordan Robertson
Music composed and performed by Brent Cross

Artist Statement – Jessie Luo + Jordan Robertson
This is a piece of art that resulted from the combination of two students’ musical tastes. Both Jordan and Jessie listened to their favourite music as a way to gain inspiration for the piece. After finishing their own separate pieces, they combined them together into one. The black and white piece was made with paint and has a strong contrast against the patterns of colour made by pencil crayon layered overtop. This gives the viewers an intense visual experience. The music used as inspiration was the soundtrack from “The Godfather” and the song “Crazy Bird” by Wild Child.

Artist Statement – Brent Cross
I was first struck by the duality of both intensity and playful spirit within the artwork by Jessie Luo and Jordan Robertson. With this in mind, I gathered samples of prepared piano by recording plucks, hits, scratches and ambient random sounds from the inside of our piano. Using piano sounds, affected and looped electric guitar, and vocals from Lisa Butel, I first built sonic playgrounds to represent Jordan’s delicate and playful artwork. Lisa recorded a vocal with granulated delay to represent the strong and intense brush strokes of Jessie’s artwork.

Thanks to Vancouver New Music for conceptualizing and organizing this artistic event during these difficult times.

Brent Cross is currently developing a more compassionate use for his music through real time improvisations and composition, community and artist collaborations and developing heightened physical awareness to sound and its presentation in space.
