Artist Statement – Lisa Butel

I began my interpretation of Lisa Walker’s graphic score, “Entropic”, by researching various aspects related to the graphic score. I read about spectrograms, entropy, humpback whales and questioned Lisa Walker about her whale project. I listened to various recordings of whale sounds/songs including Walker’s Dec 10, 2019 recording done in Hawaii and upon some discussion with Lisa Walker of parts of the graphic looking like Hebrew script there seemed to be a focus on the Hebrew phrase “ruach Elohim” interpreted as a “great wind” or the “Spirit of God” hovering over the waters which I loosely interpreted through my voice and with some text throughout the score.

The sound score is developed using my voice, and samples of my voice and harmonica, along with a short clip of audio that Lisa Walker used to create the spectrogram for the graphic score. I used Ableton Live and different forms of audio granulation and sampling.

Many thanks to Brent Cross for his production assistance and patience, Lisa Walker for sharing the graphic score and whale project and Giorgio Magnanensi for creating this opportunity.

LISA BUTEL is passionate about the power of voice, communication and movement. Her initial training came through years of classical vocal lessons. Later years found her moved and intrigued by extended vocal techniques and improvisation, skills she continues to develop today. She commits fully emotionally and physically when performing. Currently Lisa is utilizing found objects and electronics to shape, affect and loop her vocals. By layering vocals, foil affects, harmonica, toy megaphone, and chimes and altering the textures of those recorded loops she is able to preserve, shape and transform her vocal sounds in real time.
