Notes from the composers:
How my group and I created this piece was by using digital software to create this piece. Our initial goal was to use bright colours to create and vibrant and uplifting mood within the piece. Our purpose to make this a happy and joyful design was so that we could all look back on a design that brought good memories along that creates a song that is upbeat and exciting.

Notes from Julian La Brooy (Hitori Tori):
The score for this image is computer music. All sounds were generated using FM synthesis. Short ‘micro’ sounds were created first and these sounds were strung together in a hexadecimal based audio sequencer and programmed into an 8:00 minute composition.

The musical narrative includes a considerable amount of rhythmic movement and repetition. This was an effort to help sonically represent some of the symmetry found in elements of the image. A fluctuating tempo was used to try and show the varying increments of space occurring between repeated objects.

The curves, lines, objects and colours in the image helped prescribe: the volume envelopes, the filter automation, the pulse length, and the overall structure of the music. In focussed listening, it is hoped observers can glance at any area of the picture and make connections to sonic choices in the score.

Presented by Vancouver New Music in association with Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
