Notes from Nadina Tandy:
The Oak Tree (original title)
I came to compose my one-page score from an unexpected connection to sound.
While walking on dry Oak leaves, the crunching beneath my feet gave me pause. “Is this a sonic experience?”, I wondered.
This moment was my inspiration for the one-page score.
From the ground I picked up sticks, acorn shells, and leaves to use as mark-making tools for my composition. I dipped the stick in a mix of black and red earth ink and rolled it across the paper. With the acorn shell, I reproduced a circle shape that looked like a note to me. I finished the composition in a wash of Heather Grey. Much of my art practice is allowing room for the unexpected. Using hand-made tools, and being unsure of the marks being produced, brings a sense of exploration. This exploration generates a rawness to the line, which seemed fitting for this experimental collaboration.
