Polydimensional Scores: Light Wave

Polydimensional Scores: Light Wave

Video score by Jessie Luo, Yumeng Cai, Emma Shang
Meditations – Music by Anju Singh

Notes from Jessie Luo, Yumeng Cai, Emma Shang:
This score presents how the motions of sunlight reflects in the environment when without human
participants’ intervention. In the moving images, we can observe the reflection of lights move
along with the water surface and is shaped by the shadow of leaves and branches, like
performing a light dance to its surroundings.

Notes from Anju Singh:
This piece uses only the violin as a sound source. While the sound is manipulated in some sections, in others the violin is left bare to fully express itself. As the composition requested, the sounds respond to light density, colour, and movement. I also incorporated texture. I felt it was important to leave the black video space empty to cleanse the aural palette as many of the sounds are challenging and confrontational. The composition had asked for a comfortable space and while I am exploring some very abrasive sounds, I feel that the piece is still meditative but in short concentrated bursts that demand reflection and attention.

Playing Notes: The piece is meant to be played once. The piece is meant to be perfectly in sync with the video.

Presented by Vancouver New Music in association with Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
