Polydimensional Scores: Skylines

Polydimensional Scores: Skylines

Score by Linda Serrano and Cara Jacobsen
Music by Sara Gold

Notes from Linda Serrano and Cara Jacobsen:
Created by merging two skylines from different locations, this score focuses on the different
scales of our environmentsーthe macro and the micro. The photos were taken on walks through
our neighbourhoods.

Notes from Sara Gold:
Both layers of the score, the hard line of the foreground and the softened and composed back layer of natural elements were combined in Ableton with processing on each. Each layer is made of a one take recording after careful consideration and practice. The background layer was created by no input mixing with two analog large format console mixers that when routed from an out to an in on each device turn the mixer into a sound generator that can be played. The leaves, berries, mushrooms, grass and moss were assigned different notes on each mixer. Continuous elements throughout, light and water were represented by one low and one high oscillator from a Paia 4700 modular, soil with a reel to reel based tape delay. The foreground layer of a distinct black line of the horizon is represented with an assemblage of cymbals that have contact microphones attached and a speaker near to create a feedback loop system. Cymbal strikes and feedback resonance through this system serve as the horizon lines.
