Polydimensional Scores: Stepping into Raincouver

Score and video footage by Jenn Li

Notes from Jenn Li:
Rain is such a big part of being in Vancouver in the majority of seasons. I felt that it would be significant for telling the ecology of living and growing up in Vancouver. We hear the sounds of rain so often here, it’s sometimes tuned out, sometimes dreaded, but oftentimes a peaceful and serenading sound.

The intent to instruct the musician(s) to walk with another person (Lover, parent, child, or a friend), is because even though there is a certain focus and beauty In walking alone, I’ve always felt there was even more significance in ways if they were on that journey together with someone else. That experience becomes a lot more memorable and becomes a story to be remembered together. Even in silence.

For there to include 2 options – one in the urban cityscapes where the sound of raindrops will be the only natural agency, and one in a forest so to be completely surrounded by nature. Since I grew up in the city, the sound of rain is often the sound of nature that I hear the most frequent. It allows me to appreciate even more when I get to go to parks and forests to be completely immersed in nature. This option will provide a freedom and contrast between difference projects with the two common location types in Vancouver.

Notes from Jaewoo Lee:
This is composed from a very simple recording and for processing I used nothing other than levels when a rain drop hit near contact mic or when it spiked. I tried to bring up the floor of raindrop recording sound – that was the main process that I focused on.

Presented by Vancouver New Music in association with Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
