From 2018 to 2020 John Korsrud (Hard Rubber Orchestra) and Giorgio Maganensi, in partnership with Vancouver New Music, presented Mixtophonics. This monthly series, hosted by Lana Lou’s, invited local musicians and sound artists to play, explore and converse with each other through improvisation.

VNM originally started Mixtophonics in 2001 as a bi-monthly event at the Havana Theatre on Commercial Drive to offer a space to present sound and music explorations by a variety of young and upcoming artists living in Vancouver. In 2018, John Korsrud had begun hosting a monthly series of improvisation events at Lana Lou’s and together we decided to instigate a new and updated Mixtophonics series. The reimagined series embodied the same spirit and energy as previously, in and for a city that has changed a lot, but that still hosts a growing community of sound thinkers who enliven our community with their unorthodox creative energies.

Mixtophonics was put on hiatus in March 2020 due to Covid, but keep your eyes and ears out for more music in the coming years.
