What does a picture sound like?

The One-Page Score Project with Plastic Acid Orchestra returns this January!

Following its postponement in 2022 we have invited last year’s workshop participants to join Giorgio Magnanensi and Plastic Acid Orchestra to workshop and create their own one-page graphic scores.

Led by composer and Vancouver New Music artistic director Giorgio Magnanensi, the workshop teaches participants from a range of backgounds about graphic notation, where signs and symbols can be used to represent sounds, textures and various kinds of sonic events. Participant composers will experiment with sound, composition, gesture and figure to create their own one-page scores that they will workshop with the orchestra. The series will be topped off with a public performance of the new scores performed by Plastic Acid Orchestra, featuring an ensemble of 18 musicians conducted by Bryan Deans and Giorgio Magnanensi.

Using graphic notation, neither composers nor performers need any prior knowledge of how to write or read traditional musical notation. Participants will be encouraged to engage in abstract drawings that will form the basis of their own One-Page scores that will be rehearsed, interpreted and performed by Vancouver’s beloved Plastic Acid Orchestra in a second workshop, and at a live concert.

This workshop aims to encourage everyone to reclaim the playful and engaging exercise of imagination through sonic and visual perception.

Everyone is invited to hear the final pieces.

One-Page Scores – 2023

Stephen Quissy, Resonant Dissonance. Black ink lines and washes create abstract lines, waves and circles arranged in 4 horizontal rows that bleed into each other.
Andrea Wong, Aquatic Accordance. Pale pink, yellow, green and blue water colour lines overlap in an abstract patter that forms a background to thin, black ink lines and dots. The lines sweep over the page and overlap. Some resemble musical staves.
Jin He, Birch Unfurling_24 Solar Terms. A digital graphic with a photograph of birch tree trunks along the left edge. Contiguous to this image is a horizontal orance rectangle that contains yellow, grey and orange wavy lines contained in a smaller rectangle These appear as tree bark or wood unrolled. Small white text runs through some of the waves. The title - Birch Unfurling_24 Solar Terms - appears in English and Chinese, vertically oriented between the photo and waves.
Cimarron Knight, Liminal space: Temporal time. An abstract drawing of ink and watercolour that layers colourful geometric shapes - circles and triangles - overlaid with sweeping dashed black lines.
Jason Wright, One Who moves the Hands. A dense line drawing of highly detailel insects including a mosquito, centipedes and beetle. The insects appear in black ink and are both filled in and outlined abstractly in red-brown and cream coloured lines.
Jenn Pearson, The 33rd Garden. 12 circles in various shades of yellow and sepia form a larger circle. Inside and around this larger circle are placed dark leaves, a catkin and strands of grass. The background is a light purple watercolour wash.
Xiaozhi Yi, Red. An abstract drawing of ink, pencil crayon and conte. There is a mosly black, dense object in the centre with the edges smeared. Thin lines at right angles in red and purple are overlaid. There is a blue rectangle protruding to the left and brown, smeared wavy lines to the right.
Simonetta Ferrante, Rosso Profondo. An abstract watercolour painting with reds, purples and blacks with dense splotches in the middle and top with more transluscent smatterings towards the edges.
Zachary and Annie Burkes. A photograph of a painting in a spiral bound sketchbook against a wooden surface. A Fibonacci spiral in blue and green is in the centre against a backdrop of yellow with an arc in brown, red and blue. Paper cut into fringes extrudes from the page. Three red balls and a pink rose with leaves are collaged to the right of the spiral.
