Vancouver New Music announces 2024-25 season

The experience of encountering artists who make us stop in our tracks with the beauty or innovation or audacity of their work and their craft is something we all appreciate here at Vancouver New Music. In this spirit, we are excited to announce our new season, opening with the North American debut of Afrorack, an experimental multimedia artist from Uganda who is pioneering the making of electronic music instruments in Africa, including his hand built, homemade modular synth. He will be performing at Red Gate on September 27 with supporting artists Goo, Phen Ray and Jacob Audrey Taves. This is the rescheduled date for the show that was postponed in April.

The annual VNM festival returns this year with PROPULSION (Oct 17-19), a co-presentation with VIVO Media Arts Centre. Guest curators Kendra Place, Anju Singh, and Reylinn have each programmed a festival night highlighting emerging artists doing a wide range of exciting work, from the blissed out electronics of Juno nominated Markus Floats and the intensity of noise artist Wasauksing Sniper, to the latin influenced drones and beats of El Ángel Exterminador and the futuristic spectacle of FITNESSS.

Upcoming events in the new year include Kara-Lis Coverdale (Feb 22) performing on the largest pipe organ in Vancouver, and Martin Howse (Mar 15) leading a multi-day community workshop and collaborative performance as the guest artist for the seventh edition of our Parallel series. Rounding out the season will be a co-presentation with Early Music Vancouver bringing virtuoso Stefano Maiorana (Apr 26) from Italy, while SlowPitchSound (May 10) closes things out with his captivating brand of sci-turntabilism.
