Featuring the premiere performances of two brand new works commissioned by Vancouver New Music, all of the ensemble pieces brought together for Sound Space Architecture play with the unique, open space of the CIRS Atrium.

Howard Bashaw describes The Resonance Prism, his new work for large ensemble, as a “concerto for conductor”. The final form of the work will be shaped not only by the notations of the graphic score, and the physical space of the atrium, but also the collaborative interplay between the conductor and performers. Comprised of sections titled Pane of Shapes, Shadows, Murmurs and Motions: Homage to Kandinsky, Pane of Rays and Reflections: Homage to Isaac Newton, and Pane of Distant, Inner Light: Homage to the Spectralists among others, The Resonance Prism ambitiously covers a lot of sonic ground.

Sound Space Architecture also features the premiere of Chiaroscuro, a new ensemble work by Jordan Nobles. Nobles, well known for creating innovative spatial works that take shape in alternative spaces, has created a new work for 12 performers that plays off of the resonant space of CIRS’ atrium.

The program also includes the Canadian premiere of Scott Smallwood’s given to earth in dark blood, and ∆ƒ∆ (Delta Gradient) John Oswald.
