Splinter Reeds makes an evolutionary detour from the traditional woodwind quintet, taking advantage of the unique sounds of a closely related instrument family. The sum of their wide ranges of experience – in settings including free jazz, improvisation, electronic music, pop, punk and metal as well as classical – has enabled them to rapidly zero in on a distinct aesthetic identity.

Making their debut Canadian appearance, Splinter Reeds will present a program full of Canadian premieres of recent works and new arrangements, as well as the world premieres of Birch Patterns, for reed quintet and electronics by Canadian composer Terri Hron, and an arrangement by Kyle Bruckmann of Anna Webber’s Rectangles 2.

“Splinter Reeds…reveals the richness of color inherent in a small, all-reed ensemble.” – Avant Music News
